Dripping Profits

Many businesses have looked at their energy use and introduced measures increase energy efficiency and reduce their environmental impact. Now is the time to do the same for water.

According to Kevin Prior of CookPrior Associates improved water efficiency can lead to improved operational and environmental performance, bringing with it increased profits.

Many items of water-saving equipment come with tax relief to give companies an incentive to cut their usage, and full details of these can be found on the Water Technology List (WTL).

The WTL is run by Defra and HMRC in partnership with Envirowise and list the products that benefit from tax relief under the Enhanced Capital Allowance system.

"Climate change will impact on water costs and availability by adopting water efficiency measures organisations across all manufacturing and service sectors can mitigate some of these effects.

The potential for firms to reduce their water use is significant.

Also within the the OneNortheast region assistance may be available from the Midas programme"

Envirowise estimates that operational sites which have not previously examined their water consumption can often achieve around 30% savings on water bills by implementing simple water management measures at little or no cost.

CookPrior clients could save up to a further 50% by investing in water efficient products as part of more structured and long-term water-saving projects, says Kevin Prior.

With the impacts of climate change compounded by demographic changes the situation could become even worse.

Local water suppliers and government advisers such as BusinessLink and Envirowise offer simple low cost advice on how to take the initial steps in improving water efficiency in businesses.

However, when it comes to the next stage many businesses call on outside help to get a thorough understanding of their water use and disposal plus what can be done beyond good housekeeping to improve matters.

Kevin Prior said this is where an independent specialist can help, not being tied up with selling a particular solution they can offer advice on the best cost effective way of improving water efficiency including enabling water reuse and recycling.
