Environmental Management Systems - ISO14001
Contact: Kevin Prior Date: March 1, 2009
What's the issue?
You need to demonstrate to your customers, employees, neighbours, regulators and other legitimate stakeholders that you take your environmental obligations seriously. You're aware of some the steps you need to take but although its important, other activities seem to take priority. You're sure there are some advantages in ISO14001 certification but you're not sure where to start.
What's the answer?
CookPrior Associates have developed a simple 5 - step process to help you devise an Environmental Management System (EMS) compatible with the internationally recognised ISO 14001 standard. We can also arrange for external audit and certification to ISO 14001 by an independent assessor.
For this 5-step process to be successful, its important for the entire Management Team to be fully supportive. The first step will provide opportunities for managers to understand the implications of the programme of activities, and what will be expected from them.
The 5 steps are as follows:
Orientation Initial environmental assessment and production of an environmental policy.
Identify legal obligations Identify essential legal requirements including compliance issues. Are there any specific actions you need to take to comply with the relevant current legislation?
Create the Environmental Management System Identify where the significant environmental impacts lie then create the necessary procedures and recommend management actions (the EMS)
Implement the EMS Getting the procedures running "on the ground".
Internal Audit and management review Review the outcome of the EMS and adjust it to suit. We can arrange for independent ISO14001 certification if you wish.
The benefits of installing an EMS
An Environmental Management System will enable your organisation to:
Identify cost savings - our experience is that implementing an Environmental Management System is that it goes beyond cash neutral. It has been shown to contribute to bottom-line improvements.
Employee awareness - in our experience once employees are aware of the environmental impact of the processes on your site and that the management take these seriously they respond positively
Help gain Regulatory compliance - regulators like to see evidence of a well run operation: an externally accredited EMS can do that for you
Improve its image - become recognised as a "good neighbour"
Reduce the likelihood of potential liabilities - by integrating your EMS into your operational activities, you'll be less likely to fall foul of environmental legislation.
How can we help?
We can tailor out assistance to suit you organisation. We can act as a mentor to one of your own staff and help them through the process. Alternatively we can act as your Environmental Manager and draw up the draft policies, carry out the assessments, write the procedures and hand over the manuals prior to your external certification.
